The San Francisco 49ers have been trying to extend Brock Purdy, but the two sides have not agreed to terms yet. Could Purdy demand a trade if the two sides cannot figure things out?
After the season ended, general manager John Lynch noted the team’s desire to keep Purdy around. However, comments at the combine cast a slight shadow of doubt.
“We have started negotiations. We’re talking,” Lynch said at the NFL combine, according to USA Today. “I want Brock to be our quarterback for as long as we’re here and beyond…I think the final thing is there are no guarantees that we get something done but my experience has been when both sides are motivated there’s ample opportunity to do so.”
With Lynch saying there are no guarantees, The 49ers signing Mc Jones and NFL insider Benjamin Allbright revealing the two sides are not close, there is reason for concern.
“I don’t think they’re close right now,” Allbright said on 95.7 The Game. “I said, as of the Combine, they weren’t close at all. But I do believe they want to get a deal done shortly after the draft.”
“There’s a significant gap between the amount of money that he wants and the amount that they put in front of him,” Allbright added.
Purdy has already led his team to two NFC Championships and a Super Bowl. He deserves to get paid after being the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Should the two sides continue to struggle to agree to a new deal Purdy could demand a trade. Sportskeeda’s Henrique Bulio tabbed the New York Giants as a landing spot.
The Giants are reportedly interested in Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson. Purdy would likely cost the Giants a haul of picks and maybe players. It would be safe to assume that for a quarterback who has already led his team to a Super Bowl the Giants would have to part with the No.3 overall pick. The Giants have plenty of needs with quarterback at the top of the list. They may not be picking early enough to land Cam Ward or Shedeur Sanders.
“But what if they use the pick for a veteran quarterback? If the Giants could pull up a package to acquire Purdy, they would finally have a good quarterback for Daboll to prove himself,” wrote Bulio. “If they fail to compete once again, firing the coach will be an easy decision.”
