In what is sure to be one of the biggest transactions of the 2025 offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Seattle Seahawks for wide receiver DK Metcalf on Sunday.
The move was met with a positive reception for the most part, although there are some experts out there who weren’t in love with it. Nevertheless, the Steelers have finally addressed one of their biggest needs that existed since last offseason.
With Metcalf and George Pickens, the Steelers have a formidable one-two punch at wide receiver that can elevate the offense. All that said, how much the Steelers can maximize the move will depend upon who plays quarterback, which is still up in the air.
One person who was a fan of the Metcalf trade is Steelers legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who even joked that he’s thinking of coming out of retirement to be the one to throw passes to Metcalf and Pickens.
“Coach T [Mike Tomlin], are you kidding me? DK Metcalf on one side, GP [George Pickens] on the other? Muth [Pat Freiermuth] working the middle? I might need to throw my hat in the ring,” Roethlisberger said while wearing a Steelers helmet in a video posted to social media.
“If you’re looking for a guy, I might still have a couple of throws in me!”
When it comes to the Steelers’ quarterback options, four names we’ve heard that are in the mix are Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, Aaron Rodgers and Sam Darnold.
As more time has passed since the end of last season, Wilson’s chances of returning appear to have only gotten worse, with a report even suggesting that the team prefers Fields over the 10-time Pro Bowler.
Meanwhile, Fields is expected to test the open market to see what’s out there for him, although the two sides have discussed a reunion.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Sunday evening that the Steelers are expected to make an offer to Darnold. ESPN’s Adam Schefter chimed in that Rodgers is also in play for Pittsburgh on Monday morning.
With the legal tampering period beginning on Monday at noon ET, it may not be long before we have an answer to the Steelers’ biggest offseason question.
