A heartwarming story from Vera, Spain!
Psychologist Liane Powell came across a Greyhound with a broken leg limping into a local market. Seeing the dog’s injured leg and frail body, Liane acted swiftly and took her to the veterinarian for immediate care.
During the vet visit, they made an incredible discovery – this courageous Greyhound was producing milk, indicating she had recently given birth. The race against time to find her puppies became urgent. “We put a collar and a long lead on her… Then we just followed her… She knew where she was going,” shared vet Ellen Sobry.
It was apparent that this loving mother dog had given birth in the vicinity. What happened next was nothing short of astonishing. The dog, now named Vera after the town where she was found, miraculously led Liane and Ellen on a two-mile journey straight to her tiny offspring. Vera’s puppies were located in an abandoned car, where they were safe but alone.
These adorable puppies were found to be chubby and healthy, a testament to Vera’s dedication as a mother. Vera underwent successful leg surgery and is now in the process of recovery. “The only thing she has to worry about now is eating, feeding her puppies, and sleeping. She’s a little bit timid, but she’s not too scared,” shared vet Ellen. The team is collaborating with Ibizan Hound Rescue in Murcia, Southern Spain, to find loving homes for these orphaned dogs once they are healthy enough to leave the clinic.
Southern Spain has sadly gained notoriety for the high number of abandoned Greyhounds, known as galgos, due to mass breeding for hunting purposes. The winter season is particularly challenging for these dogs, as many owners are known to abandon them during the off-season, only to acquire new ones when hunting season resumes.
Let’s share this heartwarming tale of resilience and motherly love to raise awareness about the importance of responsible pet ownership and the need to support organizations that rescue and care for these wonderful animals. #DogRescue #MiracleMom #CompassionForAnimals
