Farrah Abraham Reflects on Her Journey as a Young Mom: “I Love Being a Young Parent”

Farrah Abraham, 33, has no regrets about her journey as a young mom. Ahead of her Diary of a Teen Mom comedy debut in New York City earlier this month, the Teen Mom alum spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about her experience and shared the one piece of advice she would give her younger self while filming MTV’s 16 and Pregnant.

“I would tell that girl, ‘It’s okay to be a young mom. It’s actually better than being an older parent. Sorry, older parents,'” said Abraham, who welcomed her daughter, Sophia, at 17. “I kept facing shame, blame, and rejection, but I don’t need that. I love my child, and there’s nothing to regret. I still love being a young parent, and right now, I’m kind of like an empty nester.”

Sophia, who recently celebrated her 16th birthday, continues to be a source of pride for Abraham. The reality star shared a heartfelt Instagram tribute to her daughter, highlighting a memorable trip to Germany that marked the milestone birthday. “Happiest Sweet 16 to the one & only @sophialabraham,” Abraham wrote. “To the star who made me famous at 16, I love you, I’m excited we’re traveling the world together.”

Sophia also posted on Instagram, expressing her gratitude for the special trip, saying, “I’m finally 16, I can’t believe it 🙂 I’m so grateful to be spending my 16th in Germany.”

Abraham, who lost Sophia’s father, Derek Underwood, in a car accident in 2008 just before she gave birth, also reflected on her parenting journey. “Now I look back, and I’m like, ‘Why did my parents let me do crazy stuff?'” she joked. “But Sophia is so calm and not traumatized, and it’s just beautiful.”

When it comes to her daughter’s relationships, Abraham expressed confidence in Sophia’s maturity. “There are no concerns with her. She doesn’t rush her relationships,” Abraham shared. “She’s not caught up in fantasies at her age. She dates long-distance, and everything is peaceful.”

The bond between Abraham and Sophia remains strong, with the reality star emphasizing the importance of healthy boundaries and open communication. “We all have very healthy boundaries, but we are very close. It’s just great. I’m so blessed,” she said.

Abraham first appeared on 16 and Pregnant in 2009 before going on to star in Teen Mom, alongside Maci Bookout, Catelynn Lowell, and Amber Portwood. She later appeared in Teen Mom: Family Reunion in 2022, and the latest chapter of the Teen Mom saga, Teen Mom: The Next Chapter, continues to air on MTV.
